Jostedalsbreen is said to be one of the largest glaciers in Europe and is located within the famous Jostedalsbreen National Park which is in the western region of Sogn og Fjordande. During the 18th century this glacier did expand wrecking some of the agricultural areas in the nearby places. According to the survey in the year 1945, this glacier became the part of the National Park however global warming has this glacier withdrawing slightly. The Jostedalsbreen National Park has several different environments which range from glaciers to bare mountains and deciduous forests at the lower altitudes. The ice of this glacier stretches up to sixty kilometers which covers half the area of the park. The technical value of glacial rivers, moraines and glaciers in addition to the cultural landscapes of this mountain paddocks represent significant measures for preservation.
